  I downloaded this application and teathered to my laptop.  Initially i thought it didn't use up my data plan, but i was wrong.  got a text message indicating I've used up most of my plan.  So i guess i'm back to planning in rooting my phone to get the free wifi.

Do you understand what tethering is? Are you trying to get internet on your laptop using your phone?  Or are you trying to get internet on your phone using your laptop.  And rooting your phone will not get you free wifi. I think you are confused.

I was using my phone to get internet on my laptop....so explain to me then about what i'm confuse about...from what i understand, when you root your phone, besides being the administrator of your own phone, you get to turn on you hotspot, for free?Huh?? am i off base on that?

You are offbeat.  Yes you can root your phone to allow a tethering (hotspot) app to supply internet to your laptop.  But where do you think the internet comes from?  It is still using data from your phone. There is no free. The only part that is somewhat free is ATT charges for tethering.  It is a separate plan other than your data plan.  This just more or less hides your tethering status from ATT so they don't charge you the tethering plan. But you are still using your data plan.
