now that Swype has YET AGAIN ended it's trial I'm looking for alternatives... it seems that most people tend to lean towards Shapewriter so I got it. I haven't played with it a lot so far, but it's definitely not as intuitive as Swype. Inputs must be much more accurate to get the correct word (thus slowing me down) and the deleting of words tends to be more difficult, albeit the double tap to delete the whole word which is a nice feature.

We'll see how things go, but I would say it would be wise for Swype to not alienate a market of faithful followers already. If I get used to Shapewriter, the odds of switching back get slimmer and slimmer so they better come up with something quick if they want to keep us all (Previous Swype users) from ditching them.

Thank you so much guys! Today I noticed the swype version that was on here died on me and after checking the alternatives posted I just installed shapewriter and WOW! It is awesome and I'm much more accurate on it than with swype. Hopefully this one won't die on me. Thanks again guys...

Well, I had to switch to ShapeWriter because of the Swype debacle (hey Khassy, I spelled debacle correctly!) and have a question.  Is anyone notcing that the CAPS button doesn't work?  Wondering if it just my phone or not.  Also, one thing where Swype is better is in Swype there is a setting to automatically place a space when starting a new word.  I REALLY miss that as Shapewriter doesn't have that setting, have to type a space everytime you start a new word.  Lastly, the "q", "a" and "p" and arrow keys for the info bar are too close to the edge of the phone, the case edge gets in the way when having to use those letters and arrows.  But other than that, I have to agree with Khassy, the word suggestions appeaing in the info bar instead of a popup is way better than Swype.

My only problem with shapewriter is I'm forced to pick the word from the suggestion box to often rather than shapewriter just getting it right with the swype, basically it slows me down.

Grin  Soooo, the truth comes out!! lol!  Thanks so much for clearing that up about the CAPS key!  Also, regarding the automatic space, I discovered that I had "Disable Editing Feature" checked in the settings and once I unchecked that setting, then auto spacing was working!

..Shapewriter?

Ok, well, it's pretty much like Swype, (moment of silence, *sigh*) but I am hating this method of using the 'backspace' button:
                       >sometimes it erases the entire word, sometimes it erases one letter
                       >when holding the backspace button down, nothing happens at all
                       >sometimes when holding the backspace button down, every word, letter by letter

Then there's the 'replacement word' fiasco where I'll type a sentence like:
"I don't hey this program. Outs annoying"

       But it should have been:
"I don't GET this program. IT'S annoying" (Banana hands)

But when I try to change 'outs' to 'it's', I get this sentence:
                  "I don't hey this PROGRIT'S annoying"

Can anyone provide some hints and tips?

^ thanks. Wink

I didn't think that this may be the beta version, so that will pretty much explain everything. Just like another member said, I am also "a creature of habit," so I do hate change with a passion.

I do like how the animated trail will straighten when you complete a word, that's a nice lil feature of shapeshifter.

Well, today I got frustrated with Shapewriter so I changed input to the default keyboard. Turns out I could not, for the life of me, found a way to write a capital R while trying to log on here (BarbarianRaider) Turns out, every time I pressed case, it would go through the alternative spelllings but never with both the B&R in Capital. Why doesn't if just have freaking SHIFT key? why is it so hard to add one? one simple stop and that shift key should make the letter that follows change case, don't you think? Anyway, I don't know if I'll go back to shapewriter, unless they change the way you capitalize letters.

I believe SlideIt is a one week (or maybe 10 day) trial period for free.  Then it costs $8.29 which seems a bit heavy.

It's funny how we all have different opinions on the relative merits.  One man's preference is another's irritation!  I'm trying both SlideIt and Shapewriter to give both a good workout, and must admit that I prefer SlideIt. It gives me more accurate typing and the weird capitalization on Shapewriter annoys me.

But I still think that neither of them hold a candle to Swype.  So I'm torn - pay $8.29 for SlideIt in a few days and give up on Swype? Or make do with ShapeWriter and hope that Swype returns. hmmm . . . holding breath can be painful.

Khassy, perhaps older versions didn't expire?  I downloaded mine from the market a couple of days ago.  The comments from users referred to one week expiry (and one said 10 days).  Dunno, but I'm expecting the worst so that maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised Smiley

Well, I just switched to shapewriter. I loved swype but got tired of the constant attempts to keep up with the file expirations. I've got a few bugs to work out with it but so far so good. Sywpe lost a potential paying customer.
