Does anybody know how I can tether my phone to use the internet on my laptop without paying the ridiculous fee?  I have unlimited internet I should be able to use it how I want without paying extra.. I'm pretty sure this was asked before but the only answer's were about creating the new apn and I tried that and it didn't work.  Please help if anybody can suggest anything.

Unless you root your phone you will not be able to tether with wifi. Might be possible to do it with bluetooth or your usb cable though. Can't say for sure as I have not tried it this way with this phone.

I don't want to tether through wifi, I don't want to use the wifi from my phone on my laptop. I just want to use my regular unlimited internet on my laptop via my phone. Through Bluetooth or USB cable without having to pay the tethering fee. Thanks for your reply, appreciate it. Smiley I am considering rooting my phone,  after I read a lot about it lol,  I'm a newbie.

I am a little confused. You mentioned in the first post about changing the APN. That is in fact for tethering via wifi.  And it no longer works with gingerbread anyways.

Have you tried using the USB cable or bluetooth to access your phone's internet plan using your laptop?  I could check into it if you would like.

Lol that's why I was trying to clarify what exactly I'm wanting to do, because I had no idea changing the apn was to use wifi,  Sad clueless=me. Is it just me or does gingerbread kind of suck.. anyway yeah that's what I'm wanting to do is use my phone internet on my laptop with either Bluetooth or usb but I don't know how or if there's even a way to because of the tethering fee which I don't wanna pay, if you could that would be soo great

First thing I would try is to connect your phone and laptop with the usb cable. A screen should pop up and from that screen quickly pick USB tethering. Some drivers should then autoinstall on your laptop and you should be good to go.

Another way is explained in the below link. PDANET is also available from the market(newer version). It is free but after 14 days you can't access secure websites with the free version. I have heard some say this works and others say it is blocked as of recently.

I have just tried the first way with my phone. My phone is rooted with a Desire HD ROM so that may make a difference or it may not. Make sure you have USB Debugging enabled first. (menu > settings > applications > Development > Put a check in USB Debugging) Let me know how you make out.

Download EasyTether from the Market. Because AT&T blocks all of the tether apps from the Market, you will have to take your phone to where you get a WiFi connection, turn phone on Airplane Mode, then search for and download it from the Market. Once it's installed you can turn Apriplane Mode off and use the app forever! It's through USB. You have to buy it but it's a one-time price of $5 or $10 instead of AT&T's $20 a month tethering service.

Thanks everyone for your replies. PdaNet showed up in my market so I decided to give it a try, and it worked via usb. It didn't work via bluetooth probably because I'm missing a bluetooth driver for my phone, and it refused to dowload so it won't let my phone connect to my computer without that driver. After I downloaded the PdaNet app I had to download the PdaNet installation program for my computer. Downloaded it on my phone, then opened it by connecting my phone with usb and using the mount as disk drive option, opened it from my downloads on my phone and it installed with no problems. After that all I had to do was connect my phone via usb and enable usb on the app on my phone and it automatically connected me on my computer. I'm so glad it worked, I hope AT&T doesn't catch on lol. I tend to use a lot of data and always leave my internet on anyway so maybe they won't notice?

I rooted my phone but I still blocked by att. Do I need a different rom (using cleardroid 1.3.1 root a while ago and now want to try tethering)? I can tether to my phone with "wifi tether" but no internet access. Usb tether also doesn't work can we not tether for free any more? Is there a guild which rom do I use to get tethering? Thanks
