Starting April 29, 2011, HTC will be rolling out new maintenance release for the HTC Inspire 4G.

This update will only be available for AT&T Inspire 4G Customers and will be sent to the device over the air. Once the release is ready, Inspire 4G users will receive a notification on their device advising them of this update and provide instructions to receive and install it. Users can proactively check for this update by going to Home>Menu>Settings> AT&T Software Update> HTC Wi-Fi software update.

This Maintenance release includes:

I take it that if you have rooted your phone, you do NOT want to download and install this update?

After doing some reading on a couple other sites, I answered my own question.

NO.

How long is this update supposed to take to download?  Mine has been showing the green arrow since about 1:00pm.  so its been almost 6 hours so far and I have pretty fast wifi connection.  Is there something I should do?

Actually, if you're rooted and have a custom recovery installed, along with a custom rom, the OTA update will fail to install. These OTA updates look for certain files to be present, and if you've significantly "changed the landscape", it won't see what it's looking for and will simply abort the installation. It doesn't really require you to do anything at your end, it's just the way these OTA updates operate.

I don't know about OTA updating, but if you download the RUU update you can run it, and once it finds your phone it will present you with a screen to proceed to flash. Switch over to your file manager and hunt for the .zip file it decompresses. Should be about 240-300MB in size. So copy it to another location and hit cancel.
Open up the zip wit winrar and delete HBOOT from the archive.
You can also make a backup copy of this .zip file before you delete the HBOOT file if you want to have a way to get back to stock.
Now you have a simple zip file that will let you update to stock RUU and will not overwrite your HBOOT, so you can install SU and terminal apps, etc...
If you ever have to return the phone for warranty you can use the original .zip file you found with the locked HBOOT. Just flash it and your done, back to original version.

My only complaint about the AT&T Rom is it has deliberate sabotage for video streaming apps built into it. AT&T does not want people streaming movies (even if they pay for it legitimately) over their network with this phone. If the video drivers detect Netflix they just exit with no error. I think the whole walled garden idea kills competition. I already have Netflix and I don't want to pay another fee per month to be forced to watch AT&T's exclusive video streaming service.
I think there is a war going on and carriers are forcing their clients to use only their services, even if they are horrible.

Does this update allow installing apps from "Unknown Sources"

What build number will you have after this update?
(Or, what other number should I be looking at that will be updated in Settings\About Phone\Software Information)

No, it will not let you install unknown apps.

The build number changes from 1.80 to 1.84, and the radio is updated to 26.06.06.30_M I believe.

They have started to push this update out in Dallas--my wife and I got it on Sunday.  With wifi, it took under a minute to download, and about 5 minutes to install, including what looked like about 4 reboots.  Warning:  if you have Swype, it will break Swype--the keyboard still works, but you can't draw any more; it works like the stock keyboard.  You have to uninstall Swype, and then reinstall it using the Swype Installer app.
