Mine has been rooted since I bought it.  What would I need to do to get this update?  I never got the OTA Gingerbread update notification last fall and if this is ICS, I definitely want to get it.

if you rooted it, you won't get the OTA update.  You will need to upload it manually.

This is what's in the update:

Starting July 31st 2012, HTC will be rolling out a system update for the HTC Inspire 4G.
This update will only be available for AT&T HTC Inspire 4G Customers and will be sent to the device over the air. Once the release is ready, HTC Inspire 4G users will receive a notification on their device advising them of this update and provide instructions to receive and install it. The system update can also be downloaded below and manually applied to the device.

New features:

HTC Sense 3.0
Task Manager
AT&T Address Book

Fixes/Updates:

Call optimization improvements (fewer dropped calls)
Improved security functionality
SMS/MMS Thread – Contact Display Fix
Background Data Use Improvement

WARNING: During the upgrade process the device will reboot multiple times and show software upgrade screens. Do not remove the battery as this will stop the update and your device may be rendered inoperable!

Getting Started
Before you proceed with the update, make sure you have done the following:

Set aside approximately 20 minutes to allow the device to update
Connect the device to a charger
Ensure the battery is charged to at least 30%
Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network (required to download the software).

Installation instructions
To manually check for the update, follow these steps below:

Tap Menu.
Tap Settings.
Tap AT&T Software Update.
Tap Check for updates.
Tap OK.
After you select your method of download, you will be prompted with a Wi-Fi or Data fee warning message. If this is acceptable, tap OK to start the upgrade process.
The status of the download can be viewed in the Notifications pull down.
Once the download is complete, the user will be prompted to install from the Notifications pull down. Tap the System update to begin the upgrade process.
Tap OK to begin the update process to software version 3.20.502.52.
The device will reboot and begin installation. Users will not be able to use their device during the installation process (approximately 10 minutes).

WARNING: During the upgrade process the device will reboot multiple times and show software upgrade screens. Do not remove the battery as this will stop the update and your device may be rendered inoperable!

Slide the bar down to unlock the screen.
System update complete. Tap OK to continue

Manual system update instructions:
If you are outside of AT&T/Wi-Fi coverage, or the update is not found, you may perform a manual system update.

Performing the system update manually will delete all information from the device. Ensure all information is backed up before proceeding.  Information saved on the microSD card will not be affected.

Performing the ROM Update:

Download and save the HTC Inspire 4G™ for AT&T ROM update to your PC.
Connect your device to your PC via the supplied USB cable. NOTE: You must have HTC Sync installed on your PC in order to run the update.
On the Connect To PC pop-up on your device, select HTC Sync.
NOTE: If the pop-up does not display, go to Menu > Settings > Connect to PC > Default connection type and tap HTC Sync.
Once connected to HTC Sync, locate the HTC Inspire 4G™ for AT&T ROM Update that you downloaded and double-click on the file to launch the system update wizard.
Follow all of the system update wizard instructions shown on your PC.
Once the update is complete, click Finish in the Wizard and the device will reboot.
Once the device reboots, the initial setup wizard will appear.
Once the initial setup process is complete, the device is ready for use.

You can manually install the update at HTC's website link:

If I try to 'manually check for updates' per the instructions above, after I tap on the 'check for updates' button it will spin for a minute and then I get a 'Server unavailable' error.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

^ I had the same thing happen to one of my Inspire's. I just kept on trying, after about a hour I was able to connect to the server. Must be alot of users flooding the system.

That must be one busy server.  I've been trying it off and on for two days now and still no luck.  Any other suggestions?

It seems like "mobile data" needs to be turned on for the update to show up.  You can then turn mobile data off and download the update over wi-fi.  I typically keep mobile data off so I was also getting the server unavailable message.  This update is worth it.

Wow - I allowed the update to be downloaded and installed, and now my phone is pretty much useless.  It's been a half hour since it said the install was complete and I clicked 'ok'.  The phone keeps rebooting itself now.  It was doing that before, but now I can't do anything with it.  Not happy since this is my only phone - I don't own a landline - I live alone and must have a phone.
