Hi, I am JT.  Just bought my Inspire.  To connect to my Netgear wireless router on my home network, I had to broadcast the SSID.  This seems to be normal as I have had to do it for my kids wireless gaming devices.  However, when I hide the SSID, I lose the wireless connection to my phone.  Can someone please enlighten me as to why and how to fix? Many thanks in advance for the advice I know I will receive.

Hmmm, this shouldn't be the case, the only thing broadcasting does is allow devices to see it without you having to type your SSID.  So, what you need to do is add a network, then type in your SSID EXACTLY (case sensitive) how it is on your device, then put in all the wireless security stuff.

But in reality, you mid as well just keep it broadcasting, it isn't any more secure... it is really easy to see (find) SSID's even if they aren't broadcast.

Thanks StandingCow.  I agree with regards to the broadcasting part.  I just prefer the extra security of not advertising my network. I will go back and try turning of broadcasting again now that the phone has been on the network for several days.  I will let everyone knows what happens.

Ok, remember, after you shut off broadcasting, and you add a new network, just make sure you type the SSID correctly.   Mine works on my linksys.

OK, I tried it again, just for laughs.  When I turn off broadcasting of my SSID, I lose the WiFi connection to my phone.  I left the WiFi settings in the phone untouched.  When I turned SSID broadcast back on, the phone immediately reconnected.  I am completely baffled.  The only other thing I can think to look at is the encryption type.  I am using both WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].

BTW, I got this off of the HTC Inspire 4G (AT&T) forum just now.  Looks like the phone cannot connect to hidden networks automatically.

"If you are connecting to a Hidden Network with a non broadcasted SSID, that network will not show up under detected available networks. In order to connect to a hidden network, you will need to select “Add Wi-Fi Network” on the Wi-Fi settings page and manually enter in the settings for said network."

This is definitely something that should be addressed.  If my laptops and other wireless devices can reconnect, then this phone should be able to do the same.

That isn't true, I connect to my hidden one at home... what you are doing wrong is connecting it while it is showing... then you hide it, so yea, the phone is gonna lose it since it can't see it anymore.

Do this:
1. Hide SSID's on your router.
2. On your phone, select "Add wifi network".
3. From that screen, manually type in exactly (case sensitive) what your hidden SSID is.
4. Fill out all the security stuff (whatever security you have, it is either WPA or WPA2, not both).

It should then connect to it.

StandingCow, I stand corrected.  I deleted the connection and re-entered it with my SSID hidden, and it worked.  I consider myself pretty hands on with h/w.  Most likely I typed the SSID originally in the wrong case.  All is good now.  Thank you for your tenacity!

Hey StandingCow,

Maybe you can assist with a challenge I am experiencing.  I got my inspire a few weeks ago and the first one crashed my network.  Would initially get online through WiFi and then it would crash network.  State that I am connected but get no internet connection. No other devices would work either.  Prior to this the network has been fine with Ipad, Iphone, laptops, Wii, and XBOX.  I called HTC, no response, called ISP and nothing, Dlink had no response and AT&T said I had a bum unit.

Got a new one and the same issue.  Would initially get online through WiFi and then it would crash network.  State that I am connected but get no internet connection.  Then I switched to my old Linksys router and same issue came up.

Any recommendations?  My SSID is displayed.
